Roof Damage in Glen Daniel?

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

Rain is pouring off of a clogged rain gutter. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Raleigh County.

Rain Gutter Blues in Glen Daniel

I didn’t realize there was a leak in my roof until a big storm rolled in, and I saw the water marks blossoming on my bedroom ceiling. Upon further inspection, I noticed that my rain gutter over the door had been blocked by storm debris and had been backing up onto my roof, allowing the water to seep into my attic space and onto the ceiling below. I had to act fast, so I called SERVPRO® of Beckley!

The Insurance Information Institute (III) recommends that homeowners repair and protect the home’s exterior by:

  • Caulk and seal windows to guard against water seepage.
  • Inspect your roof for missing, damaged and aging shingles and make necessary repairs.
  • Check your downspouts. Remove debris that may have accumulated in downspouts and rain gutters. Position downspouts so that they direct water away from the house.
  • Check sprinklers and irrigation systems to be sure they are not creating water damage to the walls and foundations of the house. Turn off and drain outside faucets to protect against frozen pipes.
  • Install gutter guards to prevent gutter clogs and keep water flowing away from the house instead of accumulating on the roof.

Fire Escape Tips for Apartment Living in Beckley?

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

A fire-damaged apartment is shown. We are leaders in fire mitigation in Raleigh County.

Escape Tips 101

This is a “before picture” of an apartment that was damaged by fire, soot, and smoke. We were called in when the apartment manager realized the cleaning and restoration job was too difficult. We arrived quickly, and in no time the apartment was restored to preloss condition. SERVPRO® of Beckley has been helping Beckley businesses and residents restore fire-damaged buildings and homes for years.

Here are some fire escape tips from the National Fire Protection Association for people living in apartments:

  • GO to your outside meeting place and stay there. Call the fire department. If someone is trapped in the building, notify the fire department.
  • If you can’t get out of your apartment because of fire, smoke, or a disability:
  • STUFF wet towels or sheets around the door and vents to keep smoke out. CALL the fire department and tell them where you are.
  • OPEN a window slightly and wave a bright cloth to signal your location. Be prepared to close the window if it makes the smoke condition worse.

Fire department evacuation of a high-rise building can take a long time. Communicate with the fire department to monitor evacuation status.

Sump Pump Maintenance Tips for Pineville

Have you inspected your sump pump lately? The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IIBHS) reports that 18 percent of sump pump failures were due to power outages, and another 40 percent of incidents involving sump pumps were attributed to clogged inlet screens or faulty float switches. SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to water damage emergencies in Pineville and other parts of Raleigh County and we have responded to many flooded basement emergencies over the years.

Here are some sump pump maintenance tips from the IIBHS:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for sump pump maintenance. These vary from running the sump pump every two to three months to a yearly cleaning before the rainy season.
  • Inspect the pump by opening the lid and remove any debris blocking the water inlet screen.
  • Pour about five gallons of water into the pump and watch the float valve rise.
  • As the float valve rises, the pump should turn on, and water should discharge through the outlet pipe.
  • Go outside and inspect the outlet pipe. Water should be flowing away from the home.
  • Contact a professional if the sump pump fails to operate during the inspection.

Downed Tree in Beckley?

2/10/2021 (Permalink)

A chainsaw sits on top of a downed tree. Raleigh County relies on us to mitigate storm damage!

A tree falls in Beckley.

Did you know that a tree is not considered “planted” until it has been in the ground for five years? According to the Utah State University Forestry Department, there are many factors that contribute to the successful planting of a tree, including selecting trees acclimated to the region, selecting trees with well-developed crowns and with no wounds on the trunks or branches, and routinely mulching, watering, fertilizing, and pruning.

Winter weather storms bring high winds, rain, snow, and ice to Raleigh County residents and SERVPRO® of Beckley respond to many winter storm damage emergencies during the winter season. Trees and tree branches are known to blow down from strong winds, and heavy rains saturate the soil and can cause tree roots to fail, and sometimes fallen trees cause damage to homes and buildings.

Our technicians are on-call 24 hours a day to assist you with storm and property damage emergencies. When we arrive, we will tarp and board up any areas of the home or structure exposed to the elements, provide an assessment of the damage, and begin the mitigation process. Our goal is to make the experience as stress-free as possible.

SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to fire damage emergencies in Pineville, and offers these tips from the NFPA on portable heater safety:

  • Purchase a heater with the seal of a qualified testing laboratory.

Cleanup in Room 222

The altercation took place sometime after midnight in my Beckley hotel. Guests in the adjacent rooms called the front desk to report people arguing and some loud crashing sounds. The amount of cleaning and restoration required went beyond what the hotel maids were capable of doing.

I called  SERVPRO® of Beckley and they sent a team out to immediately begin the cleanup and restoration process. They cleaned up and removed all the broken glass and then cleaned the walls and ceiling, the carpets and upholstery, the windows, and the bathroom and bathroom floor. Possible Causes for Water Damage in Beckley

1/20/2021 (Permalink)

Causes & Categories of Water Damage in Beckley:

An old poem has the line, “water, water, everywhere”. When you need to say this in your home or office, you know there is trouble. You may be looking at water damage. There are several different possible causes of water damage in Beckley.

Causes can include:

  • Leaky dishwashers or washing machines
  • Clogged pipes
  • Leaking roofs
  • Broken toilet pipes
  • Heavy rain
  • Snow or ice

The amount of water damage depends on the amount of water and on the cause of the damage.

It is also important to start the cleanup as soon as possible. The longer your home or business is water-logged, the more damage.

Categories of Water Damage in Beckley:

  1. Clean water. It might come from an overflowing sink or a broken appliance. The water does not pose a threat to people. Keep in mind that any water will become contaminated after it stops flowing.
  2. Gray water. This water is contaminated from the get-go. It comes from broken toilets or sump pumps. It might not look dirty, or it might be brown.
  3. Black water. Like gray water, it might not look dirty. One major source of black water is broken sewage pipes. Another source is any water that has been standing still.

Dark, menacing clouds are shown above a cloud break and sunshine over some rural hills. We provide 24-hours emergency response every day in Raleigh County.

Severe Weather Happens

Severe weather and flooding are familiar weather scenarios for the residents and business owners of Glen Daniel. February 2020 brought heavy rains, flooding, and hazardous conditions to many areas of the state, causing some residents to evacuate due to high water. SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to storm damage emergency calls throughout the year, and we see firsthand the damage high winds and heavy rains can cause.

Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on things you can do while waiting for help to arrive in the event you are under a flood warning:

  • Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
    • Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Depending on the type of flooding:
    • Evacuate if told to do so.
    • Move to higher ground or a higher floor.
    • Stay where you are.

Control Moisture to Help Stop Mold Growth in Beckley

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Condensation and Mold in Beckley

There are many different kinds of mold. EVERY SINGLE ONE needs moisture to grow.

Mold doesn’t need a storm or flood. Even a tiny bit of dampness is enough for mold.

Have you seen condensed water on the inside of a window? Have you noticed water droplets near the shower?  That water is more than enough for mold to start growing.

SERVPRO of Beckley wants you to know: if you control moisture, you control mold.

Control Moisture:

  • Clean spills or leaks quickly. Mold can start growing within 24 hours
  • Make sure roof gutters are in good shape
  • Don’t let water collect around the house foundation
  • Don’t let water collect in the air-conditioner drip pans
  • Keep drains clear
  • Indoor humidity should be under 40%
  • Wipe condensation from windows, pipes, or walls

SERVPRO of Beckley offers these suggestions:

  • Use exhaust fans

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Beckley understands that cooking equipment is a leading cause of fire damage and fire injuries in your Beckley home.

  • Many kitchen items can catch fire, including dish towels, oven mitts, recipes, wooden tools, and loose clothing

How to Use Fire Extinguishers in Beckley

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Beckley, we hope you never experience the devastation that comes with fire damage. However, in the event that disaster strikes, be aware that our IICRC certified technicians are qualified in all aspects of cleaning up the damage left by smoke and fire in your business or residence in Beckley.

Fire extinguishers may help prevent fire damage or smoke damage, but only if you know how to use them.

SERVPRO of Beckley wants to share these tips from FEMA. You can try to fight a small fire only if:

  • You have alerted others in the building that there is a fire
  • Someone has called the fire department
  • You are physically able to use a fire extinguisher
  • The fire is small and contained (like a wastebasket)
  • You are safe from the fire’s smoke
  • You have a clear escape route

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: SERVPRO of Beckley suggests you remember

Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism

Aim at the base of the fire

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

Sweep the nozzle side to side

Electrical Cord Fire in Beckley?

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

An old, faulty electrical cord is shown. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Raleigh County.

Electrical fires happen more often during the winter months than any other time of the year. SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to fire damage emergencies often and although there are many causes for electrical fires, many may be prevented by routinely inspecting your home for visible and hidden electrical hazards.

Here are some tips from The National Fire Protection Association to prevent electrical fires in your home this winter:

  • Check electrical cords to make sure the wires are not damaged, cracked or loose. If the cords need to be repaired, take the item to a professional repair shop, hire an electrician or replace with a new item.
  • Make sure cords are not running across doorways or under carpets. If they are, have a qualified electrician install more outlets.
  • Keep children away from electric cords and outlets. Cords placed in the mouth can cause a burn and objects placed in a receptacle can cause a shock, burns or electrocution.
  • Make sure that all receptacle outlets and switches have faceplates.
  • Never put more than one plug in each receptacle. An outlet may have one or more receptacles — one to receive each plug.

Cleaning Smoke and Soot Damage in Beckley

1/10/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Beckley can clean up damage from smoke and soot in your Beckley property.

Smoke is a mixture of gases and small particles. The small particles are also called ash, and they include soot. Soot is the collection of particles left from incomplete burning of products that contain carbon. These products include wood and coal. Smoke and soot do not destroy materials the way fire does. They leave behind greasy films and have an unpleasant odor.

Smoke moves from warmer areas to cooler areas. You will find smoke and soot damage on the ceiling above where the fire started, but you will find the damage in other places. SERVPRO of Beckley looks for damage in/on:

  • Outside walls and windows: Even if the fire was in the center of the room, smoke travels to the cooler areas
  • Closed-off spaces: Smoke and soot settle in cooler areas, including dresser drawers, closed closets, and wall cavities
  • Air ducts: smoke and soot travel throughout the house
  • Drapes and blinds. The drapes and blinds are cooler than other parts of the house. During a fire, the areas behind the drapes and blinds are cooler than the rest of the room. Remember that smoke travels to the cooler areas, leaving behind smoke and soot.

SERVPRO of Beckley investigates these areas to get a good idea of what kind of damage is in the Beckley building.

A ceiling and walls inside a house are shown with water stains. We restore water damage in Beckley and many parts of Raleigh County.

Dark shadows?

It was a dark, rainy day in Glen Daniel, and I noticed a dark shadow on my ceiling and wall that I had never seen before. On closer inspection, I realized that the dark shadow was actually a growing water stain. Yikes!

Fortunately, the professionals at SERVPRO® of Beckley mitigate water damage emergencies like mine 24-hours a day, every day. I called them and they came out, assessed the damage, and immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. They determined the cause of the leak to be a bad shingle on my roof, so they tarped my roof to prevent further damage and set up blowers and air movers to take the excess moisture out of the air. After the area was completely dry, they repaired the roof leak, replaced the insulation and damaged drywall, and repainted the damaged area. When they were through, you would never know there had been a leak!

Mold Removal vs. Mold Remediation in Beckley

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Beckley shares the differences in mold removal and mold remediation. Understanding that microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere naturally, helps us to know we need to remediate mold instead of removing mold as removing mold is nearly impossible.

Mold, once exposed to moisture, can begin growing into colonies within 48 hours. Moisture sources that help mold grow include windows, air conditioning/heating units, leaks, pets, and even clothing materials. SERVPRO of Beckley  has these tips to offer about mold remediation:

  • First, protect yourself by ventilating the area where mold is present
  • Wear protective gear such as gloves, a mask, and eye protection
  • Throw out whatever mold has destroyed, if you can do so safely
  • Identify materials that have been exposed to moisture for over 24-48 hours
  • Keep humidity at 40% or higher
  • Ultimately, let SERVPRO of Beckley in Beckley remediate the mold safely and get your home or business back to normal. While we cannot prevent mold from happening, we can remediate the damage making it “Like it never even happened.”

An Important Note:

By law, only licensed professionals can remediate large areas. A “large area” is 10 square feet or more per the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA.)

OSHA Guidelines for Fire Extinguisher Usage in Beckley

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

fire extinguishers SERVPRO of Beckley is Here To Help.

SERVPRO® of Beckley knows that owning a fire extinguisher is not enough. Knowing the proper use of fire extinguishers can prevent fire from destroying lives in Beckley.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that employers train their employees how and when to use fire extinguishers. OSHA does not allow untrained employees to use a fire extinguisher.  They must provide the training shortly after the employee is hired, and then every year thereafter. OSHA also requires monthly inspections for fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguishers have to be placed where they cannot be moved or damaged. The carrying handle should be 3-1/2 to 5 feet above the floor.

Employees must know when to use fire extinguishers.

SERVPRO of Beckley suggests asking yourself these questions regarding fire extinguishers in your Beckley  business:

  • Have I pulled the fire alarm?
  • Can everyone get out?
  • Is the fire extinguisher easy to reach?
  • Do I know how to use it?
  • Is the fire contained in a small area?
  • Is the smoke non-toxic?
  • Do I have an escape route?

If you can answer “yes” to all of the questions, it is reasonable to use the fire extinguisher.

SERVPRO of Beckley reminds you that fire is fast. If you cannot contain it within 30 seconds, get everyone out of the area. Call 9-1-1 once you are outside.

Christmas Tree Fire in Pineville?

12/14/2020 (Permalink)

Presents are shown laying underneath a Christmas Tree. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in and around Beckley.

Holiday Fire Safety Tips

I’ll never forget the time my big Airedale Terrier, Scooter, went to sleep under the Christmas tree. I came into the room with another armload of decorations, and he saw me and tried to stand up really fast and knocked the tree over. All of the decorations went flying through the room with a crash! The poor dog was so horrified that I didn’t have the heart to scold him. I just petted him and told him it was okay; everyone has a bad day now and then!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Christmas trees caused $10 million in direct property damage between 2013 and 2017. SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to fire damage emergencies in the Pineville area every year and has seen the damage that Christmas tree fires cause.

Here are some safety tips from the NFPA to help prevent a Christmas tree fire:

  • Cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk before placing it in the stand.
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source.
  • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit
  • Add water to the tree stand and add water daily

Tile flooring covered in yellow mud Mud in Monroe County Church

A local church suffered a water loss caused by run off from an excavation site. An area above the church was being excavated and an unexpected rain storm hit one morning before the ground could be sloped and re-seeded properly. Without trees and other vegetation in place the topsoil was not shielded from the force of the rain and flowed rapidly and easily down the slope towards the facility.

As soon as the damage was noticed, SERVPRO of Beckley was contacted to begin mitigation. Numerous rooms including a kitchen and the gymnasium took several days to extract, dry, clean, and treat. Thankfully they received just the run-off of water and mud and no major damage to the exterior of the building that could have happened had a large landslide ensued.

Drastic temperature changes caused damage to a Condo at a Ski Resort

8/28/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment placed in the hallway on top of the sub-flooring Dehumidifier and Air movers are setup to dry one area of this condo at Snowshoe.

On Monday January 21st the temperature at Snowshoe Resort averaged 13 degrees which is typical for this Ski Resort. Non-typically 4 days later on Thursday, the average rose to 51 degrees accompanied with rain. The sudden warming and rain turned the snow on a rooftop into slush that created a drain blockage similar to an Ice dam.

The water that backed up behind the slush leaked into a vacation rental causing damage to the ceiling, insulation, walls, and floors. After tearing out wet drywall, insulation, and flooring the equipment was set up and monitored until the drying was completed.

The owner of the condo was concerned that he would not be able to get all the work done before Ski season was over and he would lose revenue until the following season. After we finished, his contractor immediately started the rebuild and he was able to rent out the condo much quicker than expected.

Safety Tips for Commercial Building Owners:

8/23/2019 (Permalink)

Strip Mall in Beaver Mall Strip Mall in Beaver WV houses a variety of businesses including an Antique Store.

Owning commercial property can be financially rewarding but you must stay on top of the maintenance to protect your building and tenants. Hire a dependable maintenance company or supervisor that will do inspections on a regular basis for each unit you own. Provide them with a detailed list that includes intervals of the things you require them to inspect.

The inspections are primarily done to protect your investment but also will ensure your facility will pass State, County, or City building inspections. Check with your local authority for a listing that will more than likely include:

Both the Fire Alarm and Sprinkler systems must be tested and serviced annually.

Fire Extinguishers are visible and are not expired.

Circuit breaker panels and junction boxes aren’t covered.

Exit doors are easily accessible and emergency lights are working properly.

Walkways especially stairways are not obstructed

Lightning Safety

8/20/2019 (Permalink)

Photo showing that lightning travels the ground after it strikes a tree

Most all of us have known the lesson “STOP, DROP, and ROLL” if our clothing is on fire and the “TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN” to stop us from driving through high water.  Do you know the lesson for Thunder and Lightning?

Do not wait to go indoors until it rains as lightning may strike as far as 10 miles away from rainfall. You are in danger once you hear thunder.  Always take shelter in an enclosed building or hard-top automobile with all windows closed. Tractors, motorcycles, golf carts, or bicycles are NOT considered shelter.

Avoid the following once you are sheltered:

                Windows, Doors, Porches, Gazebos

                Concrete walls or floors

Plumbing – do not wash your hands, bath or shower, wash dishes or laundry

Corded phones, electrical cords or equipment, any device connected to an outlet

If you are caught outside crouch in the open field as far from trees as possible and do not hold any metal items such as fishing poles, golf clubs, umbrellas, tools, etc.

How are Hurricanes Named?

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season-June 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019

The World Meteorological Organization began a strict procedure in the naming of Hurricanes and tropical storms in 1953. Prior to this the storms were tracked by year and order but often storm advisories broadcast from radio stations were incorrect causing a lot of false rumors and confusion. NOAA states “Over time, it was learned that use of short, easily remembered names in written as well as spoken communication is quicker and reduces confusion when two or more tropical storms occur at the same time”.

Only female names were used from 1953 thru 1977 then male names were added to the list in 1978 and 1979. There are 6 list and the names are used on a six-year rotation, meaning the following 2019 names to identify storms will be used again in the 2025 season (unless they are retired from the list).

The Greek Alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and so on) will be used if more storms occur than names on the list.

Labor Day is Monday September 2, 2019.

Dishwasher hose outlet in a Summersville apartment destroyed by a mouse.

SERVPRO of Beckley has seen a lot of water damage from different sources. From plumbing problems, natural disasters, HVAC’s, and appliance malfunctions just to name a few. Occasionally we have some jobs that are definitely not your typical damage.

A property manager at an apartment complex near Summersville contacted us for water damage repairs. They told us there was a problem with a dishwasher that had malfunctioned. We arrived on site and began to remove the dishwasher but discovered that the appliance wasn’t the cause!

Keep in mind that a lot of people in WV live in the country. To enjoy the peace and quiet we have to be willing to occasionally deal with those pesky field mice that may leave the field and get inside our homes. What we found the cause of the leak to be was that a mouse had chewed small holes through the hose outlet.

Water mitigation was performed, hose outlet replaced, and the dishwasher was re-installed after the re-construction was completed.

Kitchen flooring damaged in Beckley WV

12/1/2018 (Permalink)

This is wood flooring that was destroyed by a dishwasher that malfunctioned.

Ask any family member what their favorite appliance is in the kitchen and the majority will say the “dishwasher”.

Why? It is so much easier to load dirty dishes and push a start button than it is to stand over a sink washing, rinsing, and drying. The dishwasher does all three steps and you can take a relaxing break while it does all work.

But it can also become your enemy by causing costly residential flooding. In certain circumstances you may be able to prevent damage by checking the two water lines that are connected to your dishwasher twice a year. The hoses can deteriorate over time and leak or blow out in the middle of the cleaning cycle disbursing gallons of water.

It is highly recommended that you operate your dishwasher when you are at home. Do not turn it on and walk out the door to work or run errands. If you are home and see the leak you can quickly shut off the appliance or the main water source and soak up as much water as possible to avoid further damage.

Fire Clean up in Bluefield WV

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

Damage caused by a grease fire in a kitchen

This fire was caused by grease that became overheated in a cast iron skillet.  The stove and range hood were damaged and cabinets can be cleaned and refinished. The home received minimal damage because the cook was knowable enough to quickly extinguish the fire by covering the flames with a metal lid.

Use the following actions if you are ever faced with a grease fire:

  1. Turn of the Burner – DO NOT move the pan (the fire can spread )
  2. Cover the flames with a metal lid or baking sheet
  3. Douse with baking SODA or Salt – NEVER use flour or baking POWDER
  4. Use a Fire extinguisher (Class K)
  5. Call 911 and get out of the house shutting doors as you leave.

Air conditioning unit catches fire at a Hotel in Lewisburg,WV

8/29/2018 (Permalink)

Quick responses by both the Hotel Management and SERVPRO prevented long term loss of revenue.

Because of quick action and having a fire extinguisher readily available, damage was minimal when an air conditioner caught fire in a hotel room. Water did not have to be used to extinguish the flames making the cleanup take less time than if water damage had been involved.

During the summer this hotel is fully booked and the room needed to be ready as soon as possible. The manager needed us there fast! SERVPRO of Beckley arrived in less than 3 hours to begin cleanup.

The exact cause of what caused the malfunction is unknown but it comes down to either a mechanical or electrical failure. These units are maintained by a professional but it was in the heat of summer. The unit worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week and may have overheated.

Attic fire in White Sulpher Spring, WV

Ceiling collapses bringing sheet rock and charred debris to rooms below.

Attic Fires can bring down a lot of charred and wet debris as you can see from this picture. Residents see all of this mess and become astounded with the thoughts of having to clean up their homes and contents. You have other things to worry about, let us take care of this part of your loss.

Our staff has been trained on exactly what to do with any type of fire or smoke damage. We use special equipment and supplies depending on the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire.

Relax, let SERVPRO of Beckley worry about all the mess. Actually it is best that you:

DON’T attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces

DON’T’ Shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture

DON’T turn on ceiling fixtures, wiring may be wet or damaged

DON’T clean garments, send them to a dry cleaner because improper cleaning may set in smoke odor

Hurricane Season Awareness

8/24/2018 (Permalink)

The 2018 Hurricane season is from June 1, 2018 through November 30, 2018.

NASA states “Hurricanes are the most violent storms on Earth”. But should we track the path of Hurricanes, Tropical Storms/Depressions in Southern West Virginia?

We may be hundreds of miles from the coast but when Hurricanes make landfall they can continue to spread extreme amounts of rain or high winds. These storms can bring torrential rains that can cause severe flooding (compared to wind & surge takes the most lives).

High winds can topple trees and break branches causing damage to roofs and other property. Power poles/lines may fall causing fires, the possibility of electrocution, and blocking driveways and roads.

So stay alert during Hurricane Season, lives and properties can be saved by being prepared and ready to protect your family.

Tip for Labor Day Weekend -Protect your home and contents

8/20/2018 (Permalink)

A dumpster and lawn full of personal belongings destroyed after thousands of gallons of water ran through a residence while the family vacationed.

Summer Season is almost over and the upcoming Labor Day weekend is the reminder that Fall Season is near. A lot of families want to relish in that last summer “long” weekend so trips are planned to be near water.

It may be at the beach, lake, or river but they want this weekend to be filled with water sports like boating, kayaking, floating, or fishing. What they don’t want is to return home late Monday evening to a water filled residence.

Plumbing leaks happen and the common causes are from:

            Toilets, showers, tubs, and sinks.

            Ice makers, dishwashers

            Washing machines, water heaters

You don’t have to go to each of these and shut them off, instead go to your main water shut-off valve.  Water leaks can be very damaging and costly especially if you are away from home for days before the leak is discovered. By turning off the main water line you can prevent thousands of gallons of water from flowing through your residence.

Athens, WV surprised by flood waters

8/17/2018 (Permalink)

Department of Highways begins repair on one section of a road closed due to flooding in Athens WV

Athens, WV residents are concerned but not surprised to hear about flooding in towns positioned near our southern Rivers (Greenbrier, New, Bluestone, and the Guyandotte).  But Athens isn’t located on the banks of a river so they never expected their town and areas surrounding them to experience “flooding” in May 2018.

So much rain fell in such a short period of time the ground could not absorb the amount of water fast enough to prevent flooding.  A total of 4.53 inches fell and 3.5 inches of that happened in less than an hour.

Ground water filled many homes and businesses and several roads were closed. Mud, rock, and debris were scattered along the highways in addition to some pavement being totally washed away making travel impossible.

Severe weather can happen ANYWHERE – flooding is not always near large bodies of water - this small town is a perfect example.

Lightning can start a fire in a flash

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

It is estimated that a lightning bolt’s temperature can reach 50,000 degrees

Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions are examples of a natural disaster. Just like other natural disasters lightning strikes are inconsistent. Your home may be struck but the neighbor beside you will be left untouched. Lightning causes major damage to property, structures, vehicles, and household items each year.

A lightning strike to your home will make an explosive sound so loud and powerful that everything in your house shakes.  Call 911 immediately.

You may not see flames or smoke so you may not realize right away that your house is on fire. The fire may hide in the inside walls or the attic space. The fire department can determine if there is a hidden fire. If they conclude there is not a fire then the next step is to contact a qualified electrical company to do an electrical diagnosis of your homes wiring.

Mold growth in ceiling from water intrusion

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

A very small water leak in the bathroom above this room went unnoticed for several weeks.

This property was for sale and the realtor found the problem on a visit to show a potential buyer. The realtor contacted us and during our initial visit our estimator recommended that an Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP) be contracted to inspect and test the mold.

Our recommendation was passed on to the home owner and they immediately contacted an IEP for testing.  Within just a few days the IEP developed a protocol, environmental controls, and technical specifications along with detail how remediation was to be conducted during our project.

SERVPRO of Beckley followed all of the guidelines set by the IEP. When we finished the IEP returned for the post remediation sampling. Based on the results of total spore air sampling surveys they determined the mold remediation was successfully completed.

A water leak in your home may be from the refrigerator

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

This small plastic water line caused a very costly water damage claim.

If you find water on your floor in the kitchen and cannot find a leak at the sink or dishwasher the next place to check is the refrigerator.  More than likely the water-line connections to the ice maker is the source.

The water-line can come loose, the seals can age and crack, or the plastic hoses can tear or get kinked. Depending on the circumstances you may have to simply tighten the connections. If you continue to see water dripping down the line to the floor both the water line and connectors may have to be replaced.

Other places on your refrigerator to check is a blocked defrost drain, a poor connection between the water filter and the water supply, or the drain pan may have cracks or damage.

Safety Tips for setting up your Gas Grill

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

A gas grill set up too close to an exterior wall caused siding to melt and smoke damage inside the home.

Damaging fires from grills are more common than you may think.  Here are some tips on how you can protect your family and home from a harmful fire before you fire up the grill.

First purchase a fire extinguisher to keep close to the grill. Water will not put out a grease fire it will actually spread the fire.  Make sure the grill is assembled properly and remember gas grills are fueled by liquid propane that requires special handling and storage.

Another important decision is where the safest place to set up the grill is.  NEVER cook inside your home and NEVER cook inside you garage or on your covered porch. Set up away from tree limbs, and keep 10 feet away from your outside walls and deck railing (unless the manufacturer’s instructions say it can be closer).

Sometimes no matter how careful you are accidents happen. If your gas grill catches on fire and you have smoke or soot damage inside your home you can count on SERVPRO Franchise Professionals to respond quickly.

Mold can be found in unimaginable places

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

The homeowner looked for days trying to find why her bathroom had a musty smell - We found it !

Do you have an odor in your home and you just can’t determine what or where it is? If you can’t visibly see anything then there is a possibility it could be mold. Mold can smell like a musty odor, but it can also smell like earth, fruit, floral, chocolate, sour, oily or spicy.

Mold can be found in places you wouldn’t imagine. Under your flooring whether it be carpet, vinyl, or linoleum. It can be beneath your floorboards, wallpaper, even in the insulation inside the walls or above in the ceiling.  Mold is often found underneath or behind cabinets and appliances. It’s not unusual for us to find it in the attic, crawlspace, and in your HVAC System.

If you have looked and looked and can’t find what’s causing that smell, contact SERVPRO of Beckley today. We have trained professionals and the right equipment to figure out where your odor is coming from.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

6/29/2018 (Permalink)

Our crew’s health and safety is a huge priority for us it’s not just an OSHA regulation.

We hope you are never faced with a mold problem but if you are and use SERVPRO of Beckley you can expect our team to be dressed in “Personal Protective Equipment”. Please do not be alarmed or offended.

The following are excerpts from the “OSHA ‘s Mold Safety & Health Topics”

Any remediation work that disturbs mold and causes mold spores to become airborne increases the degree of respiratory exposure. Actions that tend to disperse mold include: breaking apart moldy porous materials such as wallboard; destructive invasive procedures to examine or remediate mold growth in a wall cavity; removal of contaminated wallpaper by stripping or peeling; using fans to dry items or ventilate areas.

The primary function of personal protective equipment is to prevent the inhalation and ingestion of mold and mold spores and to avoid mold contact with the skin or eyes. The following sections discuss the various types of PPE that may be used during remediation activities.

Gloves protect the skin from contact with mold, as well as from potentially irritating cleaning solutions.

To protect your eyes, use Properly fitted goggles or a Full Face Piece Respirator. Respirators protect cleanup workers from inhaling airborne mold, contaminated dust, and other particulates that are released during the remediation process.

Protective Clothing -While conducting building inspections and remediation work, individuals may encounter hazardous biological agents as well as chemical and physical hazards. Consequently, appropriate personal protective clothing (i.e., reusable or disposable) is recommended to minimize cross-contamination between work areas and clean areas, to prevent the transfer and spread of mold and other contaminants to street clothing, and to eliminate skin contact with mold and potential chemical exposures.

4th of July "Innocent" Danger

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

PLEASE protect small children and your home as you celebrate the 4th of July

PLEASE protect small children and your home as you celebrate the 4th of July Celebrations next week.

Did you know that those little SPARKLERS we expose small children to are the most frequent cause of firework injuries? These seemingly innocent little sparklers burn at temperatures of up to 1800 degrees. This type of intense heat mixed with fabric can ignite flames in just seconds.

In an article written on July 1, 2016 by the Boston Globe – Metro:

“Last year, (2015) emergency rooms around the country treated an average of 267 fireworks-related injuries per day in the 30-day span between June 19 and July 19. The majority of people who are injured are male and most are in their early 20s or younger. In fact, one in five people injured are 9 years old or younger.”

The article categorized the injuries by the type of “firework” devices. The “All other Devices” category accounted for 44% of pyrotechnics injuries and the seemingly innocent sparkler caused a 22% of those!

Please stop and think about the dangers before you buy. Instead of purchasing sparklers seriously consider entertaining the young children with a piñata, confetti popper, balloons filled with confetti, noise maker, or my personal favorite - glow in the dark toys.

A surprising amount of water can flow through little pipes

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

This little pipe caused BIG problems

In February 2016 I did a blog titled “Little Thing – BIG Problem” about the importance of keeping water pipes warm.  I never imagined that almost exactly two years later our crew would be working on a major water damage that involved this very little water pipe.

The homeowner told me her parents had suffered a water loss caused by a water line break and she didn’t want to go through what they had. So she was doing everything she knew to do to keep her water pipes from freezing inside the home during this unusually cold winter.

She forgot about the water pipes in an empty apartment above her detached garage until she headed to work on a Monday morning.  She found her vehicles covered with debris from the collapsed garage ceiling and several inches of water covering the floor.

You may be the Lucky one after all

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Flood waters recede now the cleanup begins

The flood waters have receded and the water is extracted but the work is only about to begin. The floors have to be cleaned to get rid of mud, rocks, and other various debris.  Drywall may have to be removed along with furniture, kitchen cabinets, and other contents. Then the reconstruction will have to begin.  All of this process can be overwhelming.

When faced with these circumstances it is important that you constantly remind yourself that you are the lucky one.  Your home is still standing.  It wasn’t washed downstream or even off its foundation.  So often many people are not so lucky. They can’t find not only their belongings they may never find the remnants of their home.

By allowing SERVPRO of Beckley to assist you during times like this you will again see how lucky you are. Our TEAM is trained to get the job done quickly, accurately and to show you deep respect and compassion.

Check Weather Forecast daily

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

WV Residents and Guest - This is the time of year to be prepared for flood events.

West Virginia residents expect winters in our state to bring several inches of snow and very frigid temperatures. What we often forget is how our summer season can bring large amounts of rain causing deadly floods.

11 of the deadliest floods in our state occurred in the following months. For more information:

                1 in February

                1 in November

                1 in September

                2 in June

                2 in August

                4 in July

July is here!

SERVPRO of Beckley wants to remind our residents and visitors to check weather forecast daily. Know the difference from a watch and a warning:

“A flash flood watch means a flash flood is possible in the area, because conditions are more favorable than usual for its occurrence. ... A flash flood warning means a flash flood is imminent or occurring; take immediate action to protect life and property.”

Remembering the 1000 year flood

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

In this picture if you look at the American Flag you can see by the muddy water line just how high the water rose inside.

We are nearing the 2nd year anniversary of the June 2016 flood that swept through West Virginia resulting in 23 deaths.  Two years later as I reflect back on the jobs we did after the water receded I can’t help but think about Birch River Volunteer Fire Department.

Birch River Volunteers were busy taking care of their neighborhood as their own facility was filling up with flood water.  Once the water receded they continued helping families that were displaced by the storm. Taking care of others before even considering what needed to be done at their own building.

We were contacted to perform remediation at the Fire Station. When our crew arrived they couldn’t believe the number of people from the area that came to assist in the recovery. We worked alongside total strangers to help get the Fire Station reopened to serve the community.

The meaning of Memorial Day

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day – Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, whereas Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Ronald Reagan:From one of his famous speeches given at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day in 1986.

“Today is the day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that no heroes will ever have to die for us again. It's a day of thanks for the valor of others, a day to remember the splendor of America and those of her children who rest in this cemetery and others. It's a day to be with the family and remember.

“I was thinking this morning that across the country children and their parents will be going to the town parade and the young ones will sit on the sidewalks and wave their flags as the band goes by. Later, maybe, they'll have a cookout or a day at the beach. And that's good, because today is a day to be with the family and to remember."

How an Emergency Ready Plan can potentially prevent additional damages

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

On May 22, 2017 at approximately 3:30 PM on the 5th floor of “Hinton House” a fire broke out in one of the apartments.  The Hinton Fire Department along with Summers County and Jumping Branch-Nimitz Volunteer Fire Departments responded to fight the fire. Through their efforts and the sprinkler system that activated, the fire damage was contained to the one unit, saving housing for at least 100 of our seniors.

Residents did have to be “temporally” displaced due to major water damage caused mainly by the sprinkler system.  It is estimated that approximately 45 minutes passed after the fire was extinguished before the sprinkler shut off valve could be located.

Don’t let an unmarked sprinkler shut off valve be the cause of major damage to your facility. SERVPRO of Beckley offers a “NO COST” assessment for all government, educational, multi-residential and commercial buildings.  The SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile serves as a quick reference to all utility shut offs and important contact information.

Black Knight Country Club is purchased by the City of Beckley

4/20/2018 (Permalink)

Private Country Club soon to go Public

The recent closing of Black Knight Country Club was a sad day for many in the Beckley and surrounding areas. But thanks to the City of Beckley purchasing it in April 2018 our community is smiling again. This is a subject just about everyone is talking about in our small town and I became curious about the 90 year history of this property.

  • The Golf course/clubhouse was originally organized in 1928-29 by the vice president of Raleigh Coal & Coke, Col Ernest Chilson. The name “Black Knight” was the trademark of Raleigh Coal & Coke. It was a private club and only the prominent in coal and related industries could become members.
  • Raleigh Coal & Coke ceased operations in 1950. The club members purchased Black Knight in 1951.
  • For the next 60 years the shareholders kept the facility open to private memberships only. Membership began to decline and once again closure was emanate. Luck had it that another prominent coal operator, Jim Justice, purchased the club in June 2011. The local newspaper released that he paid $1 million dollars for the property and amenities.
  • Justice states he invested over $5 million but still could not get the membership increased and the cost down to keep the club open. The announcement came after Christmas 2017 that the private club was closed.
  •  In April 2018 the City of Beckley finalized its decision to pay Gov. Jim Justice $3 million to purchase Black Knight Country Club.

We wish our town success and best wishes to the city public works department as they proceed to keep this historical facility open.

Councilman-at-large, Tim Berry, said it best “People are looking forward to being able to take part in what used to be an exclusive country club. Now, they can come as regular members of the public to enjoy.”

While you are away bad things can happen

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

A small break in a water line can cause thousands of gallons of water to escape into your home if the water flow goes undetected.

It is becoming more and more common that our retired West Virginians are seeking warmer weather for the winter months. They love their Wild and Wonderful state in the Spring, Summer, and Fall but in the Winter they retreat to a balmier climate.

The relative, friend, or neighbor that is checking on the home while they are away often walk in to find water everywhere inside.  Not all accidents can be eliminated but some can be prevented if a few steps are taken before our retirees pull out of the driveway headed south.

This is the condition of duct work we found in a commercial building

Business owners - do you lease or own your commercial building?

Do you know how long it has been since the HVAC System was installed in your building?

Are odors and contaminants such as mold and irritating dust being distributed all over your building?

Has your facility been in a circumstance involving fire, smoke or suspected mold growth?

If you don’t have good answers to these questions, call SERVPRO of Beckley for more information about the Duct Cleaning Process we can do to improve your indoor air quality.

We can help remediate bacteria, fungi, and mold. Reduce potential for mold growth, restore peak energy efficiency and eliminate offensive odors. The written inspections and estimates are free.

Keeping your system at peak condition can extend the life span of the equipment.

Are you afraid of mold growing in your home?

4/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold behind a wooden cabinet in a utility room that went unnoticed for an extended period of time.

Controlling the moisture in your home is the best approach to your fear.

Here are a few things you can do inside your home to keep moisture levels under control:

  • Open exterior doors and windows whenever possible to keep air circulating.
  • For closets that are rarely used, keep the door cracked so air can circulate.
  • Use AC units, dehumidifiers, and exhaust fans regularly.
  • Purchase high quality air filters for your HVAC Unit.
  • Watch for mold growth in the soil in your house plants.
  • Fix water leaks.
  • Check for condensation on your windows.
  • Dry Wet surfaces as soon as possible.
  • Don’t leave wet materials lying around.

If you are taking steps to control the moisture and still smell a musty odor or see signs of mold, there may be a problem that only a remediation company can recognize. Contact SERVPRO of Beckley, a qualified Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional.

Say What? Wet paper can be saved?

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

Accidents do happen even in the most unlikely places

Water intrusion in your home or business not only damages the structure and contents, there may be substantial damage to your documents and photos.

Not everybody lives in the age of technology where documents, books, and pictures are digitized. Some of us still have filing cabinets, book shelves, and photo albums. If I were faced with having to discard my most precious memories and legal documents it would be more devastating than the damage to my home.

SERVPRO has the resources to dry, clean, sterilize, deodorize, and digitize documents.  I never imaged wet paper could be saved until I witnessed it after a medical facility contacted us to save some of their patient records that had accidentally gotten wet.

Don’t worry about losing your large format items either. We have the resources to provide “Document Restoration” to Hospitals, Law firms, Engineering Firms, Libraries, and Government buildings.

Woodrow Wilson High School (WWHS) Beckley, WV - Softball team – 2018

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

These girls are ready to hear “Play Ball”

The softball team for the Flying Eagles has been selected and is anxiously waiting to start the 2018 season. They were scheduled to play 32 games in the span of just a few weeks.

This has been a tough season already but a game hasn’t even been played yet. The first 8 games were cancelled. First because of the WV Teacher’s strike and now weather conditions are preventing the girls from getting on the field.

I spoke with Coach Pam Davis today and she told me they should be able to get a game in Friday March 24th. They will face Independence High School on the Coal City, WV field at 7 PM.

Their 2018 schedule can be found online at wvssac.org. We hope the community will get out and support the Flying Eagles.

The office manager at SERVPRO of Beckley, Pam Davis, is the softball coach for the Beckley WV -Woodrow Wilson High School (WWHS) Flying Eagles.  Pam, your SERVPRO team wants to say Good Luck and enjoy your daughters’ senior year!

Aerosol Container Explosion

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

Store aerosol containers in a cabinet or pantry where the temperatures are cool and a good distance away from the kitchen stove.

We recently completed a job in a home after an aerosol can exploded.  The homeowner was hospitalized for burns but has since fully recovered. Damages to the structure were minimal but smoke odors extended throughout the house.

This unfortunate accident could happen to anyone that cooks using aerosol cooking oil. It is so convenient to keep the oil close to the stove within reach while cooking. But be mindful that when placed in an area near a heat source the temperature in the can increases. Pressure in the can will increase as the temperature rises and may lead to an explosion.  If the explosion happens near an open flame a fire will also ignite.

Our customer had been canning most of the day so the heat in the kitchen area was much warmer than normal. He had finished canning and was removing his canned goods from the pressure cooker to the counter. The steam along with the already higher temperatures caused the pressure to rise in an aerosol can sitting on a shelf above the stove.

Thundering Herd and the Mountaineers

3/19/2018 (Permalink)

Team SERVPRO of Beckley wants to say congratulations to both WVU and Marshall for a job well done!

From 1977 to 2015 Marshall University Thundering Herd and West Virginia University Mountaineers Basketball Teams meet yearly on the hardwood. To the typical West Virginian it wasn’t so much about winning or losing, it was about a sports event that brought together an entire state whether in person, watching the game on TV or listening to it on the radio. We have only two Division I Teams in the entire State and we do not have a Professional Team so yes this game was important to us.

Three years later on March 18, 2018, our state once again came together as these 2 teams met at the NCAA Tournament in San Diego, California. We found out on March 16th and for 2 days everywhere you went the conversations were about the upcoming game.  Unless you were a diehard fan of either school, the end score really didn’t matter. It was about Pride. Pride in 2 relatively small Universities from a small state that made it to the top 32 tournament teams in the nation.

Heat Wraps can be overheated and cause damage

3/19/2018 (Permalink)

Debris from a neck warmer found in a microwave that was left unattended.

Microwavable heating pads or heat wraps are becoming increasingly popular due to the comfort they provide when suffering a migraine or headache, neck or shoulder pain, muscle spasms or cramps, backaches, and other aches and pains.

A home owner left his heat wrap in the microwave much longer that the instructions said to. He returned to the home to find smoke and odor throughout the entire house. Fortunately no fire was reported.

It is important that you read and follow the heating instructions and keep these instructions for reference. Instructions will specify how long bags should be heated and should be strictly followed.

“A product that absorbs and stores heat in this way is a potential fire risk if not used properly. For this reason, it is vital to follow manufacturers’ instructions to avoid possible injury.

Other warnings you may find in your instructions:

  • Do not leave the heat wrap unattended when microwaving.
  • When reheating, reduce the microwaving time to prevent burn.

Bob Evans Restaurant Fire in 2016

3/16/2018 (Permalink)

We applaud businesses that put employees and patrons health and safety first.

A fire in the kitchen at Bob Evans closed the doors of this restaurant in Fayetteville. WV in 2016.  Thankfully no one was injured but the closure had an instant effect on employees and customers.

Bob Evans Managers knew they had to take prompt action to re-open as soon as possible to eliminate lost revenue and lost wages.

We assessed the facility finding there was smoke damage not only in and around the kitchen area but throughout the entire building. The ceiling, walls, windows, furniture, fixtures, appliances, dishes, and utensils should be thoroughly cleaned.

We presented our estimate to the Bob Evans managers. With the welfare and safety of their employees and diners in mind they immediately decided to leave the cleaning & sanitation to trained specialist in lieu of using a non-professional.

Knowing how important it was for this restaurant to open as soon as possible, we utilized almost all of our crew and in 12 days this establishment re-opened their doors.

Snow, Ice, and Wind

3/16/2018 (Permalink)

Snow - It’s Beautiful – But we are ready for a break in the Weather

March 2018 came in like a lion and continued to ROAR! Due to the winter storms and the extreme cold many in Beckley and surrounding areas are having to deal with power outages, hazardous road conditions, downed trees & poles, fire & water damages and the list goes on.

SERVPRO of Beckley has been busy with both commercial and residential properties. The majority of emergency services have been for water damage caused water line breaks.  A few fires have been reported and trees have fallen on roofs. Home owners and businesses have been faced with costly repairs not to mention getting back control of their lives.

I think we all agree that “Old Man Winter” needs to take a break so that our community can sit back and relax awhile – well until next winter anyway.

Fix a Leak Week

3/14/2018 (Permalink)

Entire walls and floors had to be removed due to a water leak from the level above that went undetected for a long period of time.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is celebrating the week of March 19-25 of 2018 as a week to look for water leaks in your home. Their goal is to provide “tips for the most common water-wasting areas within the home and how to save water and money”.

Go to the link to learn more about “Fix a Leak Week”

SERVPRO of Beckley wants to set an additional goal. Undiscovered leaks and moisture build–up can lead to very costly repairs and/or replacement to your home and personal belongings.

Contact us if you are concerned that your water leak has caused damage to the floors, walls, ceilings or worse problems. You may cause further damage by attempting to clean up the water yourself.

We have equipment that can detect even the smallest amounts of moisture in a home. Our trained Professionals can provide water extraction and drying services to help return the property to preloss condition.

PROOF - Emergency Ready Plan Prevents Permanent Damage

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Mullens Middle School built around 1930 escapes major water damage

From the fall of 2016 and continuing through the spring of 2017, Emergency Ready Profiles were completed for 33 facilities owned by the WV Wyoming County Board of Education. The maintenance director took a great interest in our proposal and personally took us to each building and shut off.

In August 2017 I received the following email from him:

"The school was Mullens Middle. It was built around 1930 and has much of the original plumbing. The principal called me one afternoon to report a water line had ruptured in the wall of her office near the water cooler. She was needing help to stem the flow of water flooding her office. The custodian was on the ground floor directly below looking for a valve to turn the water off. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t remember off hand were the main water valve was at. I immediately went to your folder and grabbed the map. The valve was located in the boiler room and I relayed the information to the custodian who had the water off in no time. Since this all happened in a matter of minutes we were able to extract the water from the carpet and mop the floor leaving no permanent damage. Thank you again for taking time to help us identify all of our shut offs!!!!”

2017 CE Class

A GREAT turnout for the 2017 CE Class

Thanks to all those that attended our Continuing Education Class on May 9, 2017. We had over 50 agents in attendance, some as far away as Marlinton, WV and Iaeger, WV.

We want to thank the following for making this class such a success:

Jason - our CE instructor:  He did a great job teaching and explaining the special procedures used by professionals in mitigating and restoring fire damage claims for the insured.  As we personally delivered the certificates, everybody expressed how much they enjoy him teaching our class every year.  One of them commented that he is never boring and keeps them hanging on to every word he says.

Holiday Inn & Suites Beckley: They were amazing to work with from the initial contact to the end of the class, providing immediate attention to even the most minor concern.

KEM’S Catering: The assortment of Meats, Cheeses, Breads, Fruit, etc. was utterly delicious. Their Lunch Buffet variety was much more than we anticipated.

The Greenbrier Old White TPC Hole 1

Jim Justice purchased the Greenbrier Resort in May 2009. In an “unlikely” amount of time, only 14 months later, he brought the PGA to West Virginia. This golf tournament has become one of our State’s largest events and has generated a lot of revenue for the area.

From 2010 through 2015 the tournament days and nights were filled with entertaining activities such as Youth Day, Pairings Party, PRO-AM, and Concerts. But in 2016 the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic was cancelled due to the devastating flooding that tore through White Sulphur Springs, WV the home of the Greenbrier Resort.

Go to this link http://www.greenbrierclassic.com/Tournament-Info/Tournament-History/2016-in-Review  to see pictures of the condition of the course in June 2016. The photos show why an article in GOLFWEEK dated July 8, 2016 questioned the tournaments future.  “If the greens can’t be re-seeded by Sept. 15, the 2017 tournament is unlikely to be held either.”

“Unlikely” is what Jim Justice often does.  The debris was removed, greens were reseeded in time, bunker work, sodding of tees, all done in time for:

Thank you, Doug & Linda Epling, for your "Gift to the Community"

Come on out this season and support WV Miners Baseball for a day full of “good, clean family entertainment”.

When I think about what makes me proud to be a part of the Beckley and surrounding areas, one of my first images is the Linda K Epling Stadium, home of WV Miners Baseball.  It’s not so much about the facility but the story behind it.

On their website I read the media news archive titled “BECKLEY, WV BASEBALL: A BIT OF AN ANOMALY”. I emotionally connected with this article.  I too am a proud mother of sons that played baseball. Those practices and games were some of the best times our family had together.

For years I said that if I ever hit the Lottery I would build a nice baseball facility for young men. So I found it rather ironic that Mrs. Linda K Epling had the same vision and fortunately was able to fulfill her dream – three times. Click on this link for details. https://wvminersbaseball.com/

Prevent seeing water disbursed all over your basement floor!

We want to give you a few tips before the impending spring rains hit Southern West Virginia.  As the temperatures climb and you just have to get outside to enjoy the warmer weather, make your first venture out a productive one.

Take a look at your Roof to see if you have any shingles missing or other damages the winter winds may have caused. Don’t forget to clean the Gutters while you are on the ladder.  How about those underground or exterior Drains?

The winter could have wreaked havoc on your Siding or the exterior Paint.  Because of the mountainous terrain most of us have basements so check for Cracks in the Block or Foundation.  Remember to check the Caulking around doors and windows.

If you have managed to survive the winter without water entering your House or Business, make it a point to keep them dry this spring and summer too.

Don't let an appliance disrupt your normal everyday life.

HOT WATER HEATER – How did we survive before its invention? It’s a must have to make life easier.

Unfortunately, the water from a faulty water heater can cause major damage to our homes and businesses. We recommend that you regularly check your water heater and its pipes, including the area behind and beneath it.

Some things to look for? Indications of leaks, corrosion, and even signs of mold. If you see anything that looks out of the normal – shut-off the cold water line coming into the heater or shut-off the main water line. Contact a plumber or appliance specialist immediately.

Replacing or repairing this appliance may be an expense you were not anticipating but the investment can save not only money, it can save you the anxiety of dealing with this type of loss.

It will be days, maybe weeks, before you can cook in this Kitchen.

Talk with any family that has gone through the experience of a house fire and they will be able to describe one of the most devastating experiences of their lives. House fires cause destruction, injury and sadly deaths.  Tragic accidents happen - precaution can prevent an accident.

Here are 4 basic suggestions for prevention:

  • Stay in the Kitchen while using the stove top

  • Frequently check the oven while baking or roasting

  • Cooking utensils should be the only items near the stove.

I have a personal experience to share. While preparing Thanksgiving Dinner I had placed wax paper over my dinner rolls while they were raising. When I moved them from the counter towards the oven a corner of the paper grazed the flame on my gas burner. I was shocked at how quick the fire ignited and how high the flames were. We were fortunate that no damage or injury occurred.

Look what was found in the Laundry Room as appliances were being removed!

Mold and mildew have become a BIG concern. Most home Buyers will search the internet to see what is important when purchasing a home. A majority of web sites list “leaks, dampness, water damage, mold, mildew” in the top 10 list of things to look for.

The Seller should pull out that washer and dryer – dishwasher – refrigerator, look around the water heater, window sills, doors, bathtubs,  on the base of cabinets -  ANYWHERE there is a water source - to inspect the areas for moisture.

Since the buyer will be on the lookout for these types of issues, we encourage the seller to have their home ready for the inspection. Any money set aside for an upgrade may have to be spent on “problems” as opposed to “remodeling”.

Winter Tip

12/5/2016 (Permalink)

An Ice dam, even though it is OUTSIDE the home, can cause damage to your roof and water damage to the INSIDE of the home.

As the snow and/or ice on your roof starts to melt DOWN the roof, it may meet the larger clumps of ice in the gutter system or roof edge and have nowhere else to go but UP. This causes the water to seep beneath the shingles then drain into your attic and continue on to your ceiling, walls, flooring, insulation and other areas.

What causes Ice Dams? It is the result of heat escaping into the attic or roof space but not to the roof edge. You need your living space to be warm but the roof needs to be cold. The following are some measures to take to help keep the roof cold:

  • Insulate above the living space to prevent heat escaping through the ceiling
  • The space between the insulation and the roof sheathing needs vented so any escaped heat will flow to the outside - not to the roof.
  • Seal where warm air leaks from the living space

In addition, our Production Manager emphasizes keeping gutter systems clear of leaves and other debris. He has witnesses many homes damaged due to Ice Dams as we live in an area that sees a lot of snow storms, ice storms, and frigid temperatures.

The Power of Water - 2016 WV Flood

12/1/2016 (Permalink)

Water recedes but left behind mud and debris for removal

The power of water can be immense.

On June 23, 2016 West Virginia witnessed this power. We experienced a destructive Flash Food brought on by over 9 inches of rain in a 12 to 18 hour period. This weather episode has been dubbed a "Once in a 1000 Year Flood" and an "Exceptional Meteorological" event.

44 of our 55 counties were placed under a State of Emergency because the normally tranquil rivers turning into violent water.

What did we experience?

  • Property Damage was enormous - Homes & Businesses damaged or disappeared.
  • Whole Towns inundated.
  • Multiple bridges and roads washed out shutting down over 60 roads.
  • Lives and Livelihoods destroyed.

Most importantly we experienced:

  • People coming together to help out one another.
  • West Virginians did not sit around and wait for help, we put on our boots and gloves and started the clean-up process as soon as the water receded.
  • We observed an outpouring of human kindness from total strangers.

As devastating as this event has been we hope that when people reflect back to this Storm, they remember the good experiences too.

Backed up Storm Drain in WV

4/12/2016 (Permalink)

APRIL showers bring MAY flowers .... and .... Backed up Storm Drains, Leaking Roofs, and Flooded Basements & Garages.

When spring and summer storms are producing inches of rain, keep a close watch on your residence and take time to check on your vacation homes and rental properties.  Water damage can lead to harmful mold, rot and may affect the health of your loved ones and decrease the value of your structures.

If you find “Clean” Water damage we have tips on what you can do until we arrive to help reduce damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration.

Storm Drain backups are an emergency and must be dealt with quickly. There may be viruses, bacteria, and microbes and should be handled by a professional. If you discover contaminated water SERVPRO of Beckley has Special training and equipment necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

"Super" Derecho - June 2012

3/29/2016 (Permalink)

Derecho - A widespread and long-lived wind storm that accompanies rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms.

Until June 2012 many residents of WV had no idea what a "derecho" was. Believe me - now we know - The damage it caused and the aftermath that came with it.

Our State is not prone to Hurricanes or Tornados so we were in no way prepared for this severe summer storm. One thing we hope all of us learned is to keep an Emergency Supply Kit readily available - Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Below is a list of supplies we suggest:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day)

    Food (non-perishable 3-day supply)

Manual can opener, Battery operated radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries

    Flashlight and extra batteries

    First aid kit

    Whistle to signal for help

    Dust masks or bandanas

Plastic sheeting, garbage bags and duct tape

Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

    Local maps

    Hygiene items

Important documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account information

    Fire extinguisher

    Matches in a waterproof container

Properly Maintain your Chimney

2/26/2016 (Permalink)

Creosote filled flue

" The Benjamin Franklin axiom that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is as true today as it was when Franklin made the quote. Although many use the quote when referring to health, Franklin actually was addressing fire safety. Franklin wrote this (courtesy of ushistory.org) under an assumed name."

One tip to prevent a chimney fire - CLEAN YOUR CHIMNEY

Fireplace and wood stove chimneys need special care. A buildup of creosote on the flue and chimney walls can cause dangerous fires. The fire can totally destroy your home, or you may be faced with damage to all contents in your house including:

  • Walls
  • Furniture
  • Flooring
  • Cabinets
  • Blinds and drapes
  • Clothes

SERVPRO can clean up the smoke, soot, and water damage but please take preventive measures so it doesn't happen to your family.

In the process of selling your home?

2/19/2016 (Permalink)

You do not want this reaction when realtors show your home.

In southern West Virginia, the Coal Industry is declining and jobs are disappearing. Coal miners and other coal related workers are forced to leave the area and houses are popping up everywhere for sale.

Realtors may fail to mention that your number one priority is to have your house clean and smell good. Kitchen and bath renovations are not as cost effective as a good cleaning.

SERVPRO of Beckley can help you make an impression when potential buyers first walk through the door.

Let us get the house to top show condition:

  • Carpet, Upholstery, Drapery and Blind Cleaning
  • Ceiling, Wall and Hard Floor Cleaning
  • Deodorization
  • Duct & HVAC Cleaning
  • Mold Mitigation & Remediation - (Check for moisture. If you THINK there is a possible problem, call us to do a “Moisture Survey” –  We do the survey for free in our local area but there is a charge for an estimate if one is requested.)

Are you ready?

2/11/2016 (Permalink)

As many as 50% of businesses may never recover after suffering a disaster.

You own a business and you are out of town, the phone rings and on the other end of the line is your office letting you know your building has flooded because of a broken water line. The secretary tells you the water was 3 inches deep in the entire building when she came in and now it's at 6 inches. You ask her why is it getting deeper? Her response is "nobody here knows where the water shut off is and the water company has not gotten here to turn off the main line".

To prevent this from being your scenario, let us develop an Emergency Ready Profile for your business - A no cost assessment of you facility.

Call us at 304-253-6633 to schedule an appointment.

Ceiling Disaster

2/3/2016 (Permalink)

This intense damaged was caused by a little broken water pipe.

WV Winter 2015 - blocked highways and subzero temperatures causes damage from ceiling to floor:

  • Accidents do happen and at this building in Beaver WV it was caused due to a strong winter storm that prevented the owners from keeping the temperature warm enough to prevent the pipes from freezing.
  • The owner had recently remodeled the entire facility for his new tenant and initially thought the building was a total loss. He was elated when he found out it could be repaired.
  • SERVPRO of Beckley was there to clean up, dry, and performed demolition.
  • The construction crew that had remodeled was brought back after we finished to get the place back to "LIKE IT NEVER EVEN HAPPENED"
  • Within a few short weeks the owner could contact his tenants to move back in.

Little Thing - BIG problem

2/3/2016 (Permalink)

Small things can create big problems

In West Virginia we are often confronted with very cold temperatures. Remember to protect your water pipes from freezing. This broken water pipe appears to be such a little thing.

If this "Little Thing" is located in the ceiling, it can freeze and burst causing damage to not only the ceiling but the walls, floors, and furnishings.

From the Rooftop to the Basement or Crawl Space it could cost you thousands of dollars to clean up the damage. Then thousands more replacing furniture and clothing. You may have to move out of your home while repairs are being completed. Do you and your family have a free place to live on a temporary basis? Living out of a hotel is fun for a few days but for weeks?

Keep those pipes warm!
