Faulty Extension Cord Starts Fire in Beckley Garage?

2/13/2024 (Permalink)

An extension cord is shown. We are leaders in fire damage restoration services in Raleigh County.

Our local Beckley team is trained and certified to restore fire damage in homes and commercial properties, from the initial cleanup phase to performing rebuilding services required to bring a property back to pre-fire conditions. A faulty extension cord can pose a significant fire hazard for several reasons:

Frayed or Damaged Insulation: Over time, extension cords can suffer wear and tear, leading to frayed or damaged insulation. They can short-circuit, leading to overheating and potentially igniting nearby flammable materials.

Overloading: Plugging too many devices or appliances into a single extension cord can overload it. The excessive electrical load generates heat, which can melt the insulation, damage the cord, or even ignite nearby objects.

Poorly Made or Old Cords: Low-quality or old extension cords may have substandard wiring or connections that are more prone to failure, overheating, and fire.

Improper Use: Extension cords should not be used as permanent wiring or be hidden under rugs, carpets, or furniture. Cords can overheat when trapped or covered, increasing the risk of a fire.

Pinched or Crushed Cords: When extension cords are pinched between heavy objects or crushed under furniture or doors, it can damage the cord, causing exposed wires and potential fire hazards.

Portable Fire Extinguisher Purchasing Tips for Beckley Residents?

11/1/2022 (Permalink)

A person uses a portable fire extinguisher to put out an oven fire. We are leaders in fire damage restoration services in Raleigh County.

Our local team in Beckley has been restoring fire damage in Raleigh County since 1999! Portable fire extinguishers can save lives and minimize fire damage when used correctly. Here are some tips for selecting a fire extinguisher for home use from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • For the home, choose a multi-purpose extinguisher (that can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the fire extinguisher instructions and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher training.
  • Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.
  • Know when to go. Fire extinguishers are one element of a fire response plan, but the primary element is safe escape. Every household should have ahome fire escape plan and working smoke alarms.

What Equipment is Used to Restore Smoke Damage in Beckley?

8/5/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke is filling a room. We are trained and certified to restore smoke damage in Raleigh County.

When you have smoke damage, our local team in Beckley can help. Every fire leaves a unique signature based on the fuels burnt during the fire event. Here are examples of the types of specialized equipment we use to restore smoke damage:

Air Scrubber or Filter

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning system (HVAC) air scrubber, or a high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) air purifier can capture larger smoke molecules. There will still be some residual odor from smaller molecules or surface residues.

Ozone Generator

This is a fast and highly effective smoke odor restoration method. These machines emit ozone, which follows the same paths through the air as smoke and oxidizes any residual traces in the air or on surfaces.

Thermal Fogging

Thermal fogging is an intensive treatment involving fogging machines. After residents evacuate, smoke cleaning professionals fill a structure with petroleum distillates that neutralize odors and ventilate the area.

Hydroxyl Generator

This is a slower and gentler alternative to ozone. These machines rely on ultraviolet light to generate hydroxyl radicals that eliminate smoke odors. It will take about three to five days of continuous operation to achieve the same results as a single ozone treatment.

Vapor Modification

This odor elimination method relies on aromatic compounds and a blower or fan to neutralize smoke odor.

Microwave Fire in Oceana Home?

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

A person is starting a microwave oven. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Wyoming County.

Microwave ovens are great for busy households, and they simplify our lives and make it easy to reheat a meal or quickly defrost a dinner. Our local team in Beckley wants everyone to be safe around microwave ovens and offers these microwave oven safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • PURCHASE a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way, the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall of the product.
  • PLUG the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord
  • MAKE sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users
  • OPEN food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.
  • FOOD heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.
  • NEVER heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns. Warm-up a bottle in a bowl of warm, not hot or boiling, water, or by running it under the tap.

How to Use Fire Extinguishers in Beckley

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Beckley, we hope you never experience the devastation that comes with fire damage. However, in the event that disaster strikes, be aware that our IICRC certified technicians are qualified in all aspects of cleaning up the damage left by smoke and fire in your business or residence in Beckley.

Fire extinguishers may help prevent fire damage or smoke damage, but only if you know how to use them.

SERVPRO of Beckley wants to share these tips from FEMA. You can try to fight a small fire only if:

  • You have alerted others in the building that there is a fire
  • Someone has called the fire department
  • You are physically able to use a fire extinguisher
  • The fire is small and contained (like a wastebasket)
  • You are safe from the fire’s smoke
  • You have a clear escape route

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: SERVPRO of Beckley suggests you remember

PASS:

Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism

Aim at the base of the fire

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

Sweep the nozzle side to side

Electrical Cord Fire in Beckley?

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

An old, faulty electrical cord is shown. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Raleigh County.

Shocking!

Electrical fires happen more often during the winter months than any other time of the year. SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to fire damage emergencies often and although there are many causes for electrical fires, many may be prevented by routinely inspecting your home for visible and hidden electrical hazards.

Here are some tips from The National Fire Protection Association to prevent electrical fires in your home this winter:

  • Check electrical cords to make sure the wires are not damaged, cracked or loose. If the cords need to be repaired, take the item to a professional repair shop, hire an electrician or replace with a new item.
  • Make sure cords are not running across doorways or under carpets. If they are, have a qualified electrician install more outlets.
  • Keep children away from electric cords and outlets. Cords placed in the mouth can cause a burn and objects placed in a receptacle can cause a shock, burns or electrocution.
  • Make sure that all receptacle outlets and switches have faceplates.
  • Never put more than one plug in each receptacle. An outlet may have one or more receptacles — one to receive each plug.

Christmas Tree Fire in Pineville?

12/14/2020 (Permalink)

Presents are shown laying underneath a Christmas Tree. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in and around Beckley.

Holiday Fire Safety Tips

I’ll never forget the time my big Airedale Terrier, Scooter, went to sleep under the Christmas tree. I came into the room with another armload of decorations, and he saw me and tried to stand up really fast and knocked the tree over. All of the decorations went flying through the room with a crash! The poor dog was so horrified that I didn’t have the heart to scold him. I just petted him and told him it was okay; everyone has a bad day now and then!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Christmas trees caused $10 million in direct property damage between 2013 and 2017. SERVPRO® of Beckley responds to fire damage emergencies in the Pineville area every year and has seen the damage that Christmas tree fires cause.

Here are some safety tips from the NFPA to help prevent a Christmas tree fire:

  • Cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk before placing it in the stand.
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source.
  • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit
  • Add water to the tree stand and add water daily

Fire Clean up in Bluefield WV

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

Damage caused by a grease fire in a kitchen

This fire was caused by grease that became overheated in a cast iron skillet.  The stove and range hood were damaged and cabinets can be cleaned and refinished. The home received minimal damage because the cook was knowable enough to quickly extinguish the fire by covering the flames with a metal lid.

Use the following actions if you are ever faced with a grease fire:

  1. Turn of the Burner – DO NOT move the pan (the fire can spread )
  2. Cover the flames with a metal lid or baking sheet
  3. Douse with baking SODA or Salt – NEVER use flour or baking POWDER
  4. Use a Fire extinguisher (Class K)
  5. Call 911 and get out of the house shutting doors as you leave.

DON’T attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces

Lightning can start a fire in a flash

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

It is estimated that a lightning bolt’s temperature can reach 50,000 degrees

Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions are examples of a natural disaster. Just like other natural disasters lightning strikes are inconsistent. Your home may be struck but the neighbor beside you will be left untouched. Lightning causes major damage to property, structures, vehicles, and household items each year.

A lightning strike to your home will make an explosive sound so loud and powerful that everything in your house shakes.  Call 911 immediately.

You may not see flames or smoke so you may not realize right away that your house is on fire. The fire may hide in the inside walls or the attic space. The fire department can determine if there is a hidden fire. If they conclude there is not a fire then the next step is to contact a qualified electrical company to do an electrical diagnosis of your homes wiring.

Safety Tips for setting up your Gas Grill

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

A gas grill set up too close to an exterior wall caused siding to melt and smoke damage inside the home.

Damaging fires from grills are more common than you may think.  Here are some tips on how you can protect your family and home from a harmful fire before you fire up the grill.

First purchase a fire extinguisher to keep close to the grill. Water will not put out a grease fire it will actually spread the fire.  Make sure the grill is assembled properly and remember gas grills are fueled by liquid propane that requires special handling and storage.

Another important decision is where the safest place to set up the grill is.  NEVER cook inside your home and NEVER cook inside you garage or on your covered porch. Set up away from tree limbs, and keep 10 feet away from your outside walls and deck railing (unless the manufacturer’s instructions say it can be closer).

Sometimes no matter how careful you are accidents happen. If your gas grill catches on fire and you have smoke or soot damage inside your home you can count on SERVPRO Franchise Professionals to respond quickly.

4th of July "Innocent" Danger

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

PLEASE protect small children and your home as you celebrate the 4th of July

PLEASE protect small children and your home as you celebrate the 4th of July Celebrations next week.

Did you know that those little SPARKLERS we expose small children to are the most frequent cause of firework injuries? These seemingly innocent little sparklers burn at temperatures of up to 1800 degrees. This type of intense heat mixed with fabric can ignite flames in just seconds.

In an article written on July 1, 2016 by the Boston Globe – Metro:

“Last year, (2015) emergency rooms around the country treated an average of 267 fireworks-related injuries per day in the 30-day span between June 19 and July 19. The majority of people who are injured are male and most are in their early 20s or younger. In fact, one in five people injured are 9 years old or younger.”

The article categorized the injuries by the type of “firework” devices. The “All other Devices” category accounted for 44% of pyrotechnics injuries and the seemingly innocent sparkler caused a 22% of those!

Please stop and think about the dangers before you buy. Instead of purchasing sparklers seriously consider entertaining the young children with a piñata, confetti popper, balloons filled with confetti, noise maker, or my personal favorite - glow in the dark toys.

Aerosol Container Explosion

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

Store aerosol containers in a cabinet or pantry where the temperatures are cool and a good distance away from the kitchen stove.

We recently completed a job in a home after an aerosol can exploded.  The homeowner was hospitalized for burns but has since fully recovered. Damages to the structure were minimal but smoke odors extended throughout the house.

This unfortunate accident could happen to anyone that cooks using aerosol cooking oil. It is so convenient to keep the oil close to the stove within reach while cooking. But be mindful that when placed in an area near a heat source the temperature in the can increases. Pressure in the can will increase as the temperature rises and may lead to an explosion.  If the explosion happens near an open flame a fire will also ignite.

Our customer had been canning most of the day so the heat in the kitchen area was much warmer than normal. He had finished canning and was removing his canned goods from the pressure cooker to the counter. The steam along with the already higher temperatures caused the pressure to rise in an aerosol can sitting on a shelf above the stove.

Heat Wraps can be overheated and cause damage

3/19/2018 (Permalink)

Debris from a neck warmer found in a microwave that was left unattended.

Microwavable heating pads or heat wraps are becoming increasingly popular due to the comfort they provide when suffering a migraine or headache, neck or shoulder pain, muscle spasms or cramps, backaches, and other aches and pains.

A home owner left his heat wrap in the microwave much longer that the instructions said to. He returned to the home to find smoke and odor throughout the entire house. Fortunately no fire was reported.

It is important that you read and follow the heating instructions and keep these instructions for reference. Instructions will specify how long bags should be heated and should be strictly followed.

“A product that absorbs and stores heat in this way is a potential fire risk if not used properly. For this reason, it is vital to follow manufacturers’ instructions to avoid possible injury.

Other warnings you may find in your instructions:

  • Do not leave the heat wrap unattended when microwaving.
  • When reheating, reduce the microwaving time to prevent burn.

NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF HOME FIRES – COOKING

3/16/2017 (Permalink)

It will be days, maybe weeks, before you can cook in this Kitchen.

Talk with any family that has gone through the experience of a house fire and they will be able to describe one of the most devastating experiences of their lives. House fires cause destruction, injury and sadly deaths.  Tragic accidents happen - precaution can prevent an accident.

Here are 4 basic suggestions for prevention:

  • Stay in the Kitchen while using the stove top

  • Frequently check the oven while baking or roasting

  • Cooking utensils should be the only items near the stove.

I have a personal experience to share. While preparing Thanksgiving Dinner I had placed wax paper over my dinner rolls while they were raising. When I moved them from the counter towards the oven a corner of the paper grazed the flame on my gas burner. I was shocked at how quick the fire ignited and how high the flames were. We were fortunate that no damage or injury occurred.

Properly Maintain your Chimney

2/26/2016 (Permalink)

Creosote filled flue

" The Benjamin Franklin axiom that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is as true today as it was when Franklin made the quote. Although many use the quote when referring to health, Franklin actually was addressing fire safety. Franklin wrote this (courtesy of ushistory.org) under an assumed name."

One tip to prevent a chimney fire - CLEAN YOUR CHIMNEY

Fireplace and wood stove chimneys need special care. A buildup of creosote on the flue and chimney walls can cause dangerous fires. The fire can totally destroy your home, or you may be faced with damage to all contents in your house including:

  • Walls
  • Furniture
  • Flooring
  • Cabinets
  • Blinds and drapes
  • Clothes

SERVPRO can clean up the smoke, soot, and water damage but please take preventive measures so it doesn't happen to your family.
